DEC 8 2022 RCM UPDATE - FILMUNLIMITED – FLEXIBLE FILM EMULATION: UPDATED APRIL 30, 2023.

FilmUnlimited is the Resolve 5219/500 PowerGrades series emulating Kodak 17 18D and Kodak 5207 250T films. This is a complete PowerGrade reconstruction of the negative stock I shot and profiled in July and August 2018.

Designed for DaVinci YRGB color science. As of August <> 2022, it has been rebuilt for the Native Resolved Color Management (RCM) workflow. RCM version is designed for DaVinci Wide Gamut/DaVinci Intermediate Color Space/Gamma.

When I started the project in early 2021, I had two goals. To create exact replicas of both stocks and to construct them in a way that provided maximum flexibility, allowing me to achieve the look the client requested.

At the time of writing, I’ve used FilmUnlimited on all but one of my digital projects since the release of Resolve 17. It’s now my primary power grade. I’ve used it, tested it, tweaked it, and tested it some more. Now it’s your turn.

The images below are a great example of the heavier film looks that can be achieved with FilmUnlimited PowerGrades. They primarily use the Standard or Middle Grey curve versions of the Kodak 2383 LUT. Grading was kept to a minimum with only basic color balance and tone curve adjustments. These were shot on an ARRI Alexa, Sony FS700, and Blackmagic P6K. A second mouse button click takes a screenshot and opens the image in a new tab to view a slightly larger version.

The images below and the video at the top of this page show how I use PowerGrades. These samples primarily use the Rec709 curve version of the Kodak 2383 LUT for a softer contrast curve. These are commercial projects so they have been graded to the client's specifications. These projects were all shot on an ARRI Alexa, Sony Venice, Red Komodo, and Blackmagic P6K.

The image below shows the FilmUnlimited Negative Film Emulation without the Kodak 2383 Print Film Emulation LUT. Ungraded other than replacing the base curve of the LUT. Shot on Blackmagic P6K and Scarlet-X. Scarlet-X footage converted via Komodo2Alexa.
